The first WordPress version of this site was built in April 2006. It followed on from a series of sites published under the name EarthG, and a first incarnation of this site created in WikkaWiki.

This page outlines the differences and shows sample screenshots of the various versions. There are also detailed development notes which list colours, sizes, and so on: things which I would otherwise mislay or forget..

Version 1

This was built in WikkaWiki in May 2005. It incorporated some material from the previous EarthG site, which had been built entirely in Flash in 2002.

Version 2

This was launched in April 2006. It was a straight translation of the previous site into WordPress. The aim of this was to see if I could design a theme from scratch that looked the way I wanted it to look, rather than using (or mutating) an existing theme.

Version 3

This introduced a sidebar and a static front page (to see what the difficulties would be when I tried to do it). It appeared in October 2006.

Version 4

In December 2006, I changed the front page to include dynamically generated headlines, and a background image. At this stage I changed the menu in the header from a series of dreadful hacks into a more respectable, consistent, and easily managed, unordered list.

Version 5

On May 15 2007, I published version 5. This changed the front page yet again into a series of category-based chronological headlines, with a single main story and a single main image. AT this point I went through the style sheet, made it more or less consistent, and turned the site into a gridded five-column layout, as detailed below.
