In this paper I try to tackle a problem that has been disturbing me for some time now: the way that the self-serving term “virtual reality” has been allowed to fashion and shape much of the discussion that takes place around this topic, to the detriment of everyone except a small group of hucksters and cheerleaders.

Recently Ralf pointed me towards the idea of barcamps, which have their own web site and their own online rules. This has the great merit of providing a reference point for what we have been doing in an unlabelled way.

If my calculations are correct the journey I have just been on took twenty hours from door to door. I left the house in Helsinki at 06:45, to walk to Itäkeskus where I caught a bus to the airport. At this time on a Saturday the 519 only runs once an hour so 06:45 was just right to catch the bus but too early to catch the plane.

News travels slow round these parts. I have only just found out that there was an Office 2.0 conference in San Francisco last year.

Virtual Worlds 2007 is a conference in New York at the end of March that is billed as the future of marketing and media. The keynotes speakers are from MTV, IBM and Nickelodeon.
