The other night I found a single playing card under my bed, when I looked under it to see what the cat had got up to.
On one side the card displays the three of hearts. On the other side it shows a set of pirate flags. I put it on a frosted glass table on the terrace on the second floor and photograph it.
I have found myself looking at it from time to time, contemplating the differences between the flags, and understanding that the standardized “pirate flag” that we have come to know as the Jolly Roger has little basis in reality.
Like the Gunfight at the OK Corral, the truth and the myth differ greatly – and the truth holds more interest than the myth.
